Katya Birukova is a skilled conservator specializing in the preservation of tempera icons, with expertise in both Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox traditions. Throughout her career, she has treated a wide range of icons dating from the 15th to the 20th century, demonstrating expertise across various periods and styles within Christian Orthodox traditions.
Her educational foundation in art conservation was formed at the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, where she focused on tempera icons and oil paintings preservation. Katya's field experience includes a significant conservation expedition in 2015 along the Volga and Oka rivers, where she treated a number of 18th and 19th-century icons at the Trinity Church in Arefino, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
Her contributions to the field are also documented in published articles that explore the techniques and historical significance of conserving Orthodox icons and oil paintings, reflecting her deep knowledge and commitment to conservation.
